The last few months were busy, and while there were a lot of business photography requests, I also had time for some more creative and fun shoots, which turned out to be even more important, because it led me outside my comfort zone and triggered me to learn a lot of new things, not only regarding photography, but also on editing, with special thanks to my very helpful colleague David!
A few weeks ago I had lunch with some friends, and as I was amazed by the fact that one of them told me he could make a backflip, I immediately saw the image and with great enthusiasm I was describing it before I knew it.
Ok…where to start…. Luckily some of my colleagues are interested in photographing as well, so when I discussed my ideas during lunch we were brainstorming on light setups with sprinkles packages and peanut butter jars (great ideas came up)!
A few days later I went to the gym, where we planned to photograph the backflip. Walking into a gym with two giant soft boxes, a background and lot’s of other stuff while people are looking at you like they’re watching a singing crocodile (or at least that’s how it felt ;-)) wasn’t that comfortable, but wow the feeling I got when my lightning set up worked an I was able to shoot so much different great movements of a few memorable jumps (yes the man can backflip more than once :-O :-O)!
And while we still had some time, we made some very nice shots in the boxing ring!
As dutch weather is not the most steady factor when planning a photoshoot, I’m very glad I took some time over the last months to learn more about studio photography.
Besides I’m no longer dependent on the weather for shooting locations I’m still learning a lot on how to control and shape lights in new and awesome ways.
A lot of beautiful people showed up before my camera and I can’t wait to become better, not only at visualizing the beautiful sparkle in someone, but also in bringing some more magic in my photographs using special lightning techniques.
During one of the masterclasses I joined in March, I met one of the owners of Images Creative Productions. Soon after the masterclass he organized an evening with other photographers in the huge film and photography studio of Images Creative Productions in Utrecht.
It was so cool to be there, and to have a chance to photograph with all the lights and great white wall. It was an evening full of fun, learnings and inspiration. I’m looking forward to the next one!
As La Cucina Italiana is making more and more Dutch people very enthusiastic about the Italian kitchen, I am photographing their cooking classes while also learning Italian, an awesome combination! The Italian atmosphere, Ailén and Giovanni telling about their passion and cooking delicious dinners with creative variants on classic Italian dishes, is a great experience.
Imagine a long table, nice people, bottles of vino and enjoying all the different dishes……And guess what, it’s becoming even better, La Cucina Italiana will move to the Netherlands, and planned a lot of new cooking classes. You can find their program on the link below, and a quick look showed me that de Risotto classes wil come back, which I can recommend! I’m sure you will all like your self-made arancini!
Don’t worry if your Italian vocabulary just contains ‘Ciao.’ They will explain difficult things in English and there are English classes as well!

As I’m on sort of a path of choice right now, I’m trying to learn not to think too small and attract more of the photography that really lights me up and fills me with unstoppable energy. That also involves recognizing photography things which no longer fit me in a truly constructive way, and more scarier, taking action on those insights. As I’m on this path of learning and discovering I will go back to Italy within a few weeks. Because somewhere I know it’s going to bring me new insights, inspirations and awesome new things to focus on! And with already some great meetings planned, I’m very excited to go!
